A short guide to choosing paper for print

Coated or uncoated, weight, colour, feel: the four decisions that change how your print looks and lasts.

Paper is the part of print people notice without knowing why. It changes colour, contrast, feel and even how trustworthy a business seems.

Start with use. A menu that gets wiped needs a coated or laminated stock; a book that gets read for hours wants a warm, uncoated sheet.

Then weight and feel. Ask your printer for a paper sample book and hold the options in daylight. It’s the cheapest design decision you’ll make and one of the most important.
